DIY’ing a relaxed & rustic study space, with Allie

Creating the dream home office is on everyone’s wish list, but sometimes life gets in the way of pursuing reno' plans. Allie Wilson (@allie_wilson_home) is here to remind us that the wait is always worth it.
Despite Allie moving into her Essex family home years ago, she halted reno' plans for the sake of her kids. She now spends her spare time tweaking her home, one DIY at a time. Having recently transformed her home office from dated to dream-like, Allie’s patience truly paid off 💪 Typically found potting plants or creating moodboards, Allie sits down for a TEA BREAK to chat about her vision & home office transformation.

The ‘forever home’ 🏡

"We moved to our forever home about 6 years ago, it has lots of space for a busy family of five and a great garden space. The children were small and all-consuming, so updating the house took a backseat for the first couple of years. Finally getting stuck in over the last few years, we were braver with colour & textures to try and create a space that really felt like home.
The best advice I can give is to simply live in your house to get a feel for it. It's good to know where the sun falls in the house throughout the day to help plan your rooms. "

Strategic home office plans

"When planning the home office, I created a moodboard to see how the colours worked together. We wanted the space to feel relaxed and comfortable, positioning the desk so you can look out into the garden and have the doors open. For the table top, we used scaffold board wall-to-wall since we wanted to create a large space & maintain a rustic feel throughout our house. We tucked kitchen cupboards underneath the desk to house the printer and hide gaming equipment "

Allie chose BECKER & MORRISON for their charming textures ✨

Matching textures 👯‍♀️

"We thought the BECKER D-Bar Handles were perfect for this project, as their grooved texture tied in perfectly with the reeded glass doors. The beautiful brass colour really works with the green paint we chose!"

A trail of plants 💐

"Plants can really liven up a space or shelf. They can add colour, height & texture. My favourite plants at the moment are trailing ones, they look great on a shelf or in a hanging basket – try Satin Pothos, their heart shaped leaves are beautiful and they’re easy to look after. "

Wallet-sparing DIYs

"Upcycling & DIY is the perfect way to create your vision with minimal expense. We wouldn't have been able to achieve this look by buying a desk unit and didn't want to spend a fortune either."

Cuppas all round 👨‍👨‍👧‍👧

"My go-to cuppa during DIYs has to be a classic tea, we are a family of tea drinkers after all!!"

Must-follow DIY’ers

"When it comes to seeking inspiration for projects, I do use Pinterest & home magazines, but Instagram has to be my favourite. I love @crack_the_shutters, @houselust & @_lisa_dawson_"
