A project on another level

Tackling a renovation of any scale is hard work, but when your house had been converted into flats in the 70’s, it’s a whole new level.
The owners of this ambitious project lived in a flat for four years with two young children and a kitchen too small for a fridge, all whilst saving up money and chipping away to complete a long list of jobs. Needless to say, when they reached out to interior design firm, My Bespoke Room, they were beyond ready to start visualising how their dream home could look 💭

The design brief

After 4 years of dreaming about their forever home, this client had a clear and concise brief for My Bespoke Room designer, Claire. They wanted a large open plan space for the family that would also be perfect for entertaining guests.
As well as learning about the client’s challenges and wish list for the new space, My Bespoke Room also asks their clients to create a Pinterest board of images they love so that their designer can look for running themes within them and begin to craft an idea of the room they desire. The images this client sent over all had a clean, simple, classic feel ✨

The client wanted a modern and fresh take on traditional British design.

First step: the layout

Every design starts with the all important layout. It might not be the most exciting part of the design process but it’s essential to creating a space that meets the clients needs, while ensuring there’s enough breathing space to move through the space comfortably.
The client wanted the space to include a kitchen complete with a must-have island, a dining space and a living room zone complete with a wall mounted TV. They wanted it to feel open and sociable, but with their eldest son fast approaching his teen years, the client also wanted some degree of separation so they all have private zones to relax 🧘‍♂️
Designer Claire came up with a winning plan to incorporate a wall down the middle creating a clear definition between the kitchen diner and a more secluded, cosy living room zone.

Claire mapped out what the finished kitchen would look like.

The wall also serves as a place to fit a bench seat against and on the other side – somewhere to mount and hide their TV – win-win! 💪

Moodboards at the ready

With the layout locked down, Claire could then delve into the exciting part – the design direction. Moodboards are an essential tool in the designers tool kit to come up with a winning scheme 🔧
At My Bespoke Room, all clients receive 2D digital mood boards which help their designer translate their design direction on to 'paper'. This also makes it easier to communicate their ideas around colour combinations, furniture styles and styling to their client.

The 2D moodboard Claire pulled together for this space.

For this design scheme, Claire had a very clear direction for colour, as blue was a running theme throughout the inspirational images the client sent over. By choosing a bold, darker blue, it helped modernise the traditional shaker style units and provide a visual focal point as you enter the large, open space 👀

However, as blue is on the cooler side of the colour wheel, it was important to layer in warmer tones and textures into the scheme to make it feel more ‘homely’. The wooden shelf and natural elements achieves this by adding some much needed softness.
Design really is in the detail and that’s why the handle choice for the units was such an important one to get right ✅

VOLTA adds a warm, contemporary touch to the blue kitchen.

Antique brass handles would have instantly made the kitchen feel too traditional when the client wanted it to feel more contemporary. This is where Plank’s VOLTA D-Bar Slim Handle came to the rescue! The brass tone is lighter which adds the much needed warmth to the cool blue cabinets. The shape is clean and simple, instantly modernising the kitchen while still having a nod to the period style that inspired it.

Bringing the design to life

Now for the icing on the cake – the interactive shopping list 🛒 Claire highlighted the products used in the design and suggested a multitude of options at different price ranges, so that the client could then decide where to save and where to invest. In just a handful of clicks the client could checkout with everything they needed to bring the design to life.
