2022 Interiors Trends To Look Out For

When it comes to interior design trends for 2022 in the UK, we’re continuing with many popular looks from the last few years. Think natural, sustainable materials, comforting curves and arches, and elevated, multi-functional spaces 🙌

Here at Plank, we’re all about tweaking and hacking your way to your dream home. That’s why all of the suggestions in this blog are budget-friendly and straightforward to implement. All you need to get going is a rough plan, a can-do attitude and our grid-worthy hardware ✨

Green

As our lifestyles become increasingly fast-paced and we spend countless hours on digital devices, interior trends for 2022 include using green to find a sense of balance and draw on our emotional connection to nature 💚
Green falls in the middle of the colour spectrum, which means the eye requires little to no adjustment to be able to see it, adding to the sense of calm and quiet. Shades like forest green are peaceful and rich, while lime green is energising and optimistic. If you want a touch of colour to pair with muted, neutral shades, a pale shade of sage green will do the trick.

Even greener with plants

As humans, we have an instinctive need to interact with nature, known as biophilia. It makes sense, given that plants increase oxygen in the air, can reduce stress and even raise our productivity levels 🌱
Harness plants as an interior trend for 2022 by filling your home with some of this year’s most popular leafy greens, such as kentia palms, money treys and anthuriums. Or are you new to the world of plant parenting? In this case, start off with monstera, a spider plant or a hedgehog aloe – they can take it if you forget to water them occasionally. Allie Wilson (@allie_wilson_home) recommends a satin pothos as a beginner-friendly plant.
When arranging your plants, go for odd numbers of pots for a more casual look, and don’t be afraid to group plants together in different sizes. Planning on hanging some plant baskets in your garden? Get them looking lovely with the help of our J hooks, which combine clean, defined lines with an elegant, curved end.

Natural materials

Both from an aesthetic and sustainability perspective (more on that below 👇), homeowners are more conscious of the type of materials they bring into their living spaces than ever before. It’s out with artificial-looking materials, such as metal and plastic, and in with natural materials like natural stone and well-worn timber.
You can complement your outdoor-inspired interiors with our range of antique brass handles and knobs, which draw on the timeless, worn-in appeal of natural materials. Why not extend this trend further through your soft furnishings and accessories? Add a tropical twist with botanical bed linen, or remind yourself of your favourite landscapes with large wall art 😍

Sustainability

More homeowners are putting sustainability at the top of their agenda. A low-effort way to reduce your home’s carbon footprint is to wash your clothes on eco modes at lower temperatures, and then let them dry on an airer instead of through the tumbler.
You can use smart controls and devices to keep track of how much heating, water and energy you’re using on a weekly basis. Also, have a think about the lightbulbs you’re using. You’ll find that a modern LED bulb uses 80-90% less energy than a traditional lightbulb, helping lower your carbon emissions and reduce your electricity bills too 💸
To prevent any unnecessary waste or spending, we advise buying timeless pieces of furniture that you know you’ll love year in and year out, or even better, put your own spin on some unique, second-hand furniture. If you’re upgrading your home’s hardware, don’t dispose of your old knobs. Instead, convert them into hooks, or recycle your old hardware with us ♻️

Arches and curves

Curves have quickly become one of the hottest house design ideas for 2022. Whether in the form of a curved sofa, a painted wall arch, or an arched doorway, these sleek silhouettes and organic-inspired shapes add softness and a sense of comfort to your space.
You can subtly integrate curves through accessories like an arched mirror, which will also add a sense of depth and space to your room. Or, why not dot a few curvy female body candles around your home? Inspired by Roman and Greek architecture, they celebrate the female form in all its glory and would look great on your coffee table.
You can also use rounded hardware, such as our newest range of Curved Knobs. They add a premium accent to your chosen storage units, but are gentler and more subtle than hardware with clean-cut, straight lines. Check out LINTON for instant curve-appeal, or eliminate all lines with the ever-smooth LUNA Round Halo Knob.

Marble’s comeback

Another one of our key interior design trends 2022 is marble, a highly versatile and elegant material that can give your home a surprisingly affordable uplift. What’s great about marble is that it’s naturally thermodynamic and anti-bacterial, making it cool to touch and well-suited to hot and steamy environments like kitchens and bathrooms 🧖‍♀️
In this blog, you can read how DIY royalty Melanie Lissack (@melanielissackinteriors) used a marble top to hack her IKEA sideboard, along with a fresh lick of paint and our LUDLOW Curved T-Bar Handles in Brass.

Spa atmosphere

There’s nothing like that feeling of being at a spa 💆‍♂️ And the good news is that this is something you can recreate through clever interior design choices. Start with your bathroom and use a combination of natural or ambient lighting, soothing colours, essential oils and relaxing décor.
You’ll thank yourself after you invest in some super-soft, premium-quality towels, as well as a wooden bath caddy to rest your drink, book and bath oils when having a soak 🛁 If you can, we recommend recycling the original bottles for your soaps and using a matching set of dispensers. Last but not least, you can add to the sense of luxury and make your bathroom feel more dynamic by hanging up a few large prints or even creating a gallery wall.

Elegant bathroom storage

Hands up if you’re forever receiving bath and body gift sets for birthdays and Christmas? 🙋‍♀️ According to 2022 home decor trends, a vanity or tall unit is the best place to store them. This can go in an otherwise overlooked space to keep the clutter at bay.
If your bathroom is on the smaller side, you can use a wall-hung mirrored bathroom cabinet to house all your lotions and potions. At the same time, the mirror will reflect the light and create the illusion of a larger space.
An easy way to affix baskets to the wall or hang your snuggliest bathrobes, towels and clothes is with our high-quality contemporary hooks. We’ve options in Solid Brass and Matt Black, and a range of designs to choose from.

Walk-in showers

This trend is about making your shower a major feature of the bathroom by creating a walk-in shower space 🚿
For a minimalist, wet room feel, you can use a slim tray to seamlessly integrate the shower, or install tiled flooring. Instead of a door, you can enjoy ultra clean lines and minimalist styling with a sleek glass screen. Just be sure to invest in the slimmest frames you can (or frameless if possible) and thick glass.
Complete your modern bathroom with our firm and functional brass towel rails. Going back to the curved trend from earlier, we have curved rails that encourage airflow, so your towels will be dry in no time!

With green tiles and a walk-in shower, FRANKLIN fits right into this trendy bathroom.

Cottagecore

If you’re a fan of hygge, the Danish concept of cosiness and contentment, we think you’ll love cottagecore 👨‍🌾 This trend first emerged back in 2020 and continues to champion simple living, nature-driven design and cosy touches. Cottagecore embraces the charm of the British countryside and is enhanced by traditional touches, such as parquet flooring, exposed beams and bare brick.
Don’t worry if you don’t live in a period property or country cottage. You can still harness this trend by embracing floral prints, natural materials and leafy indoor plants – all key design elements of cottagecore. Another fail-safe route is to blend cool vintage pieces with your new home buys. Apply the finishing touches to your home with our SWIRLED Collection, which draws on natural forms like rippling water and wavy tree bark 🌀

Mixed materials and textures

2022 interior design trends are all about creating eye-catching contrasts by layering different materials and textures. We suggest topping off your marble and dark timber sideboards with our brass or satin nickel hardware. You’ll find that a cold marble surface will quickly be warmed up through different shades of wood and metal.
Another way you can use contrasting materials is in your kitchen to naturally divide different areas of the room. You may find it helpful to have a visual distinction between areas for food preparation and where you sit to eat. Once you’ve nailed the materials for your surfaces, add ergonomic details to your cabinets and units with our high-quality Knurled collection of hardware.

Concealed kitchens

Ideal for smaller spaces or open-plan interiors, concealed kitchens let you create a clean and relaxed, multi-purpose space by effortlessly hiding away your appliances and clutter. This involves clever storage solutions, such as pull-out shelving, concealed drawers and storage benches or seating. Boasting a flexible layout, you can transition from your kitchen to your dining or living room in just a few moments 🙌
To make your cooking space as invisible as possible, you can even opt for fingerprint sensors to smoothly open and close your doors. The obvious downside is the potential fingerprints and marks on your cabinets – especially if you have little ones. Instead, opt for discrete pulls or match your handles with the colour of your cabinets. Believe it or not, black hardware on black cabinets is a great choice and makes for a modern, seamless look ⚫️
