Trending for bedrooms 💭

The bedroom is where we wind down at the end of every day. Whether that’s listening to podcasts, reading books or simply hitting snooze, the bedroom is a place to rest, recharge and spend time with yourself. As such, the interiors world now favours personalised bedroom designs that both soothe and excite us 🛏

For 2023, the lines between maximalism and minimalism are blurred, making space for a more laid-back, comforting approach to eccentric design. We’re talking calming bedroom decor combined with elements of art deco design. Think natural materials, layered fabrics and generously sized carpets, alongside more vibrant colours and striking geometric patterns. We’re all for mixing and matching, so anything goes this year 🖼

Sound a little complicated? Not to worry, we spoke to Rachel (@therachelhendersonstudio), an interior designer and stylist, for some clarity on a few bedroom design trends 💡

Let’s get straight into our top 6 bedroom trends for 2023, and how you can introduce them into your space 🙌

1. Mix & match bold patterns

Mixing bold patterns is no longer a fashion faux pas. This year, we’re all for florals, stripes, checkers, and anything in between. Combining these patterns not only creates an eclectic, elevated look, but also acts as a means of self-expression 👩‍🎨
Rachel tells us, "more and more homeowners are looking at ways to put their own stamp on their bedroom designs – and combining stripes and checks is a great way to do just that!"
To try out this bedroom design trend, consider browsing for geometric broadloom carpets or statement floral headboards. Or, start simple and opt for checked pillows and striped rugs 🏁

Stripes

We’ve seen ticking stripes in traditional interiors, and striking stripes for contemporary folks, though now, we’re all about bold, daring stripes in bedroom designs. An easy way to incorporate this? Striped ceilings – they sure make an impression, and we’re all for it. Got an unfinished tin of paint laying around? Try painting thick stripes across your ceiling 🎨

2. Fabric layering and drapery

This year, we’ll see bedrooms with layered fabrics and drapery. Think floor-grazing, translucent curtains that create a spa-like feel. Layered bedding, including plenty of pillows, cosy duvets and knitted throws, are all a must when our priority is to create a cosy bedroom 😌
"The 'layered' look, with long floaty curtains and large fabric headboards, adds lots of character and warmth to the space," says Rachel.
Think outside the box, and drape fabric behind your headboard. Or, use drapery to line a small passageway to your en-suite bathroom. Fabric drapery can even help jazz up a plain wall. Opt for patterns or bold colours, to inject some character into your space 🌟

3. Walnut wood

In a time where we’re embracing vintage, pre-loved furniture more than ever, it’s inevitable that walnut wood would have its time to shine. Natural materials are perfect to bring the outdoors in, and create an eco-friendly sanctuary. With a warm, rich hue that complements soft green and neutrals, walnut wood brings both comfort and dimension to the bedroom 🪓

Vintage bedside tables and a wooden bed frame bring this scheme together 🛏

Keep an eye out for walnut wood at your local second hand furniture shop, if you’re looking to upcycle a pair of bedside tables or need a generously-sized bookcase. Or, get creative and install an over-bed shelf, with a plank of walnut wood. Then, go all out with organic cotton linens, clay decor and indoor plants 🌿

4. Soft blush tones and lavenders 🌺

Neutral colour schemes never go out of style. Though, Rachel explains that "more homeowners are moving away from white and grey decor, but they’re too afraid to go too 'bold' with their bedroom schemes." This is where soft, pastel tones come in. Evoking the same sense of calm as neutrals, blush pinks, lilacs and lavenders are a subtle way of introducing colour into the bedroom 💜
These restful, warm tones make for an elevated monochrome look, too. Renovating their home from scratch, @itsnotsogrimupnorth went all out, with blush pink walls, carpets, cabinetry – you name it. Not feeling as courageous? Consider introducing soft corals and pinks with your bedding, wall decor or rug 🌸

5. Modern art deco

Art deco design is on the rise. Combining unique shapes, abstract art and rich materials, art deco is looking more modern than ever. Elements of art deco design will be peppered throughout bedroom designs in 2023, including geometric panelling, vibrant colours and rich materials 👑
To tap into this trend, try mixing geometric patterns with rounded shapes. If your bedroom has a muted base colour, like beige, then try layering luxurious layers and details, like gold, emerald and sapphire 💎

6. Mushroom decor 🍄

Speaking of shapes, we’ll also see plenty of rounded, mushroom-like decor. Why mushrooms? We’re all about adding interest to spaces through the outside world, and this is a playful, maximalist-approved way to do exactly that. Pinterest predicts that mush-rooms will be huge in 2023, with people often searching for ‘weirdcore bedroom’ and ‘funky house decor’ 🌱
A statement-making motif, the mushroom interiors trend includes everything from mushroom lamps and whimsical wallpaper to indoor plants and reclaimed rattan. No matter your bedroom scheme, there’s a way of introducing this trend into your space 🌼
