Storage Ideas For Children’s Rooms

Do you ever feel like you’re in an endless cycle of picking up your child’s belongings, only for them to be scattered all over the place five minutes later? 🙃 We know how time-consuming tidying up after your little monkeys can be, which is why we’re helping you find a better way of doing things.

Zyra’s prized possessions are displayed practically 💡

In this blog, we’re sharing our range of children’s bedroom storage ideas, designed to maximise their bedroom and ensure everything has its own place. Read on to discover the powers of under bed storage, how you can save precious floor space with different types of bedroom shelves, and much more 👇

Make the most of bed storage

One of the easiest ways to keep your little one’s room looking neat and tidy is by having a bed that allows for storage underneath. This could either be a single bed with a base that lifts up like an ottoman, or a bunk bed with drawers beneath the top bunk.
Either way, we’d recommend incorporating small storage boxes so your child can tidy away their toys and keep track of where their favourites are. If they have winter coats, jumpers or spare bedding clogging up their wardrobe, under the bed would work just as well.

Use bookcases

Do you have a bookworm in the house? 🐛📚  If so, we suggest using bookcases to display your child’s riveting reads in a creative way. You could have the books stacked forward facing to show off their beautiful front covers. Or, why not take a few extra minutes to coordinate the books by colour? This will make for a bright and uplifting rainbow effect, guaranteed to put a smile on your little one’s face 🌈
Of course, bookcases can be used in other ways and we also suggest displaying your child’s favourite toys, pictures and other decorative items.

Invest in a toy box

Toy boxes are a classic when it comes to kid’s room storage ideas 🧸 Before you click ‘add to cart’ on the first toy box you see, it’s worth measuring it out to ensure it’s the perfect fit for your child’s room. If your child is younger or slightly more accident prone, we suggest choosing a toy box with rounded edges for safety. You’ll want to make sure it has a secure lid to prevent items from falling out and suffering more wear and tear than necessary. The great thing about a toy box is that you can use it for other purposes once your child stops using it, such as storing blankets, bedding and pillows.

Don’t have a box? Why not use a nifty toy bag, like Emily.

Organise closets

Another go-to bedroom storage option is your kid’s closet and yes, we’re helping you make that go further too 💪 Start by emptying everything out so you know how much space you have to work with. Then have a think whether you can install extra shelving or rails to make the closet uncluttered and more accessible. There’s no harm in using baskets or colourful storage crates either – just stick them at the bottom of the closet or on shelves to create extra sections. Think there’s room on the back of the door for a few hooks? Use this hanging space for robes, pyjamas or bags – but make sure they’re child height and within easy reach.

You can’t go wrong with extra shelves and draws 🙌

Feature a nursery wardrobe with open shelves

Enhance the colour scheme of your kid’s room while keeping the vibe tasteful and relaxed with an open nursery shelf with a hanging rail. As a smart alternative to a traditional closet, you can hang up your child’s most adorable garms on one of our contemporary brass towel rails. The outfits you choose for the nursery clothes rail will bring out their favourite colours, while the rail’s stylish brass finish will bring the feel of a luxe nursery you’d find in a magazine or on Pinterest 😍

Hang some hooks

While we’re on the subject of hooks, who says they just have to be hidden away in wardrobes? If your child loves wearing a certain necklace, bag or hat, make this precious piece a design feature of the room by hanging it on a hook 🎩
Ideal for saving space, our SPRATT Winged Hook lets you hang multiple items and is available in Solid Brass and Antique Brass, two timeless finishes that coordinate effortlessly with most colour schemes. While you’ll likely redecorate as your child gets older, you can be confident our hooks will last for the long haul. All of our hardware is coated in a protective clear matt glaze, so its impressive surface remains intact 🙌

Stack some crates

If your kiddos have toys with what must surely be a million tiny pieces (we’re looking at you, LEGO 👀), storage crates will keep them all located together and out of sight *breathes a sigh of relief*. With stacked storage crates, you can add more storage to your child’s bedroom without taking up much extra space.
We offer a range of colourful crates, but if you already have crates at home, we suggest painting or decorating them to match the style of the room. They’ll make a wow-worthy statement and add a personal touch to your child’s bedroom.

Install wall shelves

As part of our children’s bedroom shelving ideas, we suggest fitting wall shelves to make better use of the vertical space in your child’s bedroom. One option is to install floating shelves which blend in with the walls to create a clean, seamless look. This is where your child can show off their prized possessions, from toys, books and pictures through to medals and trophies. If you plan to install corner shelves, why not make the area below a cosy nook with blankets, fairy lights and cushions? 😌

Use basket wall storage

Another kid’s bedroom idea and way of using the walls is by hanging wall baskets. Again, they don’t take up much space and allow your child to see exactly where their toys are kept. Just hang a few baskets on the wall and before you know it, the floor will be cleared of toys, clothes and other items that were cluttering the space 👕
It’s a good idea to have dedicated baskets to store different types of items. Not only will this teach your child about organisation, it will help them find their items quickly. For a fun retro look, use colourful wire storage baskets. Or if you’re all about warm neutrals, use woven baskets for a hearty dose of rustic charm 🤍

Optimise storage with double-function furniture

The best type of furniture for your children’s bedrooms is the pieces that serve multiple purposes. Remember that toy box from earlier? Add some soft, padded cushions to the lid and your child has a new space to sit, play games or take time to relax. As bedroom storage ideas go, this is a no-brainer!

Introduce versatility with modular shelving

As your growing child’s interests change over time, so too will their items that need storing away. One way you can customise their room is through modular shelving, where units can be used alone or combined to form the perfect configuration for their space. These shelves can be moved around however you see fit, so you can keep using and reusing them as time goes on ⏳

Organise drawers

This one’s a life hack for the little ones AND the grown-ups too. Organisers for a chest of drawers help store small items such as socks and underwear in an orderly fashion. Forget stressful mornings diving through endless drawers and instead, have a glance at their options and quickly put together a matching outfit. Use deeper drawers to tidy away bulkier items like blankets and towels 👌

Use storage cubes

We can’t discuss children’s room storage ideas without mentioning storage cubes. This versatile option can be used in many different ways, from storing smaller items like toys and books through to housing larger playsets, games and art equipment. Like with crates, storage cubes can be stacked so they don’t take up much floor space.

Organise desks

If your child has a desk that could do with a good clean up, start by working out what can go in their desk drawers. We can imagine there’ll be notebooks, pens, school supplies and art equipment aplenty, all of which can be stored neatly in a drawer ready for when they’re next used.

Limited on drawer space? A handy desk tidy can house any bits n' bobs. Even our colourful tool boxes can double up as a statement-making desk tidy. For school documents such as homework diaries and projects on-the-go, keep them in sight in a file holder hung on the wall 📜
Although we’re in full on tidy-up mode, that doesn’t mean we want to take the fun and personality out of your child’s room. Encourage them to display their pictures, artwork and other creative masterpieces on a bulletin board on the wall 🖼

Bedroom decluttering tips

When your child’s room is one big mess, it can be hard to decide where to begin 🤔 Here are our tips on storage for children’s bedrooms to take their environment from pure chaos to an oasis of calm:
  1. Remove items that aren’t been used

We’re talking the toys that have been long forgotten about, books that are collecting dust and clothes that no longer fit 📚
  2. Go through everything piece by piece

Granted this isn’t the most enjoyable task, but it’s a guaranteed way to eliminate clutter and know how much you need to organise ✔
  3. Create designated storage spaces for different types of items

Everything should have its own place, so consider how you can make your child’s belongings as easily accessible (and easy to tidy away) as possible.
  4. Only put back the items that will be used on a regular basis

If there’s anything that can be stored somewhere else in the house, it doesn’t need to live in your child’s bedroom. Or if there are old toys and clothes that you’re holding onto more than your child is, consider taking them to a charity shop. These forgotten items will soon have a brand new home and be put to use by another little one 👶
See our post on small bathroom storage solutions.
At the end of the day, kids will be kids and leave their toys lying around. The main thing is that they learn to take responsibility for their possessions and put everything back where they found it, in its home.
